Gregory Alexander
Helen Young CUPHSONAA Professor of Nursing
Greg Alexander is a leading scholar of health information technology (HIT) in the care of older adults, focusing on critical knowledge gaps, HIT readiness, and health disparities caused by structural inequities in informatics implementations in long-term care, with an emphasis in nursing homes.
His pioneering and impactful publications have shed light on the systematic abandonment of technologies, opportunities for electronic health data sharing, and barriers to HIT adoption in the sector. One of his strongest papers, “Building Consensus toward a National Nursing Home Information Technology Maturity Model,” uses the Delphi panel approach to translate HIT maturity measures into nursing home contexts. Dr. Alexander has an impressive track record of funding. Since he joined Columbia in 2020, he has developed and submitted six National Institutes of Health grants in various roles, including as PI, multiple-PI or co-investigator. He has been designated a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, American Academy of Nursing, and the International Academy of Health Science Informatics.
Dr. Alexander earned his PhD from Sinclair School of Nursing. He served on the faculty of the University of Missouri before joining the Columbia faculty in 2020.
