Maria Roberson
As Director of Tompkins Hall Nursery and Childcare Center, Columbia University’s early childhood program, Maria Roberson fosters a nurturing and developmentally appropriate environment where young children and their families feel supported, connected, and inspired to grow together. Her leadership focuses on cultivating a joyful, inclusive culture that centers children’s curiosity and growth while supporting strong partnerships with families and staff.
Maria’s work includes overseeing daily operations, guiding a collaborative teaching team, and enhancing curriculum and pedagogical practices grounded in equity and excellence. She also leads strategic initiatives to strengthen professional development, ensure regulatory compliance, and build meaningful community engagement across the Columbia network.
Prior to joining Tompkins Hall, Maria served as Senior Vice President of Program Services and Innovation at Acelero Learning, where she led a national team providing training and technical assistance to Head Start and early childhood education programs. She also held senior leadership roles at the New York City Department of Education’s Division of Early Childhood Education and has extensive experience as an instructional coach and classroom educator.
Maria holds a Doctor of Education from Vanderbilt University, a Principal and Superintendent Certification from Hunter College (CUNY), and a BA in International Relations from Agnes Scott College. She is a proud 92Y Women in Power Fellow. Her career reflects a deep and enduring commitment to equity, public service, and high-quality early learning experiences for all children.
