Spring 2015 Online and Hybrid Learning Faculty Grants Awarded
Dear fellow members of the Columbia community:
I am pleased to announce the awardees for the faculty grant program on Hybrid Learning Course Redesign and Delivery. This program supports faculty who are developing innovative and technology-rich pedagogy and learning strategies in the classroom. These awards will help us assess the effectiveness of new approaches and tools for teaching and transmit insights about strategies that improve learning outcomes for Columbia students from all disciplines.
After careful review by a committee of senior faculty, eighteen proposals will receive funding. The courses will be implemented over the next three semesters, starting in the fall of 2015. The awardees and their courses are listed below.
This year’s projects were chosen based on their potential to enhance teaching and learning at Columbia. They will expose students to flipping of the classroom, and to team-based and experiential learning. By supporting these projects we will introduce innovative approaches to teaching in not just one course, but in sequences of courses, and potentially entire curricula.
With such a high level of interest in this program from our faculty, we will hold another call for proposals in the coming academic year. Information on Columbia’s online efforts and resources, along with courses receiving previous support, can be found at the Columbia Online portal.
This grant program is one component of a broader effort to support faculty in the classroom. This fall we will launch a new University-wide Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to provide professional development and an array of useful services for faculty and teaching assistants. The CTL will also support new approaches to instructional technology; Columbia’s Center for New Media Teaching and Learning will form a central part of the new center. I look forward to providing additional information on the CTL’s development and services in the near future.
