Julie Kornfeld appointed Vice Provost for Academic Programs

November 20, 2019

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce that Julie Kornfeld will begin service as Vice Provost for Academic Programs on January 1, 2020. She is currently Vice Dean for Education at the Mailman School of Public Health, where she will continue to serve on the faculty as associate professor of epidemiology.

As Vice Provost, Professor Kornfeld will oversee the University’s broad range of academic programs with a focus on compliance, policy, and regulatory requirements. She will facilitate partnerships with U.S. and foreign universities and organizations, manage the University’s accreditation, coordinate academic reviews of schools and other units, and advance interdisciplinary initiatives.

Julie Kornfeld came to Columbia in 2016 from the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, where she was Assistant Dean for Public Health. In her time at Mailman as Vice Dean, she has provided direction for the school’s set of doctoral and master's degree programs. Dedicated to building creative collaborations across schools, she has played a leading role in establishing Mailman’s first 4+1 B.A./MPH education programs, which support a pipeline of talented undergraduates able to complete both a bachelor’s and Master in Public Health in five years. She also secured approval for Columbia’s first formal undergraduate program in public health, the Special Concentration in Public Health.

Vice Provost Kornfeld will continue her scholarship in public health education and her teaching in Mailman’s core curriculum, helping to ensure that our work in Low Library is informed by the priorities and perspectives of our faculty. She succeeds Melissa Begg who, after five years of outstanding contributions to the office, began her new role as Dean of the School of Social Work in September.

Please join me in welcoming Julie Kornfeld as our new Vice Provost for Academic Programs.

Sincerely,

Ira Katznelson
Interim Provost
Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History
