Columbia Commons Campus-Wide Day of Interprofessional Action

April 5, 2018
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Event time is displayed in your time zone.
Hammer Health Sciences Center, 701 W. 168 St., New York, NY 10032
For the first time in Columbia’s history, faculty, staff, and students of all health sciences schools will join together in a groundbreaking commitment towards radical collaboration. Columbia University Medical Center will explore, celebrate, and expand the frontiers of health care team work during a day dedicated to improving respectful, effective, person-centered care. On April 5, 2018, all health science schools of CUMC free themselves from business as usual so students and faculty can learn together in teams. In lieu of regularly scheduled classes on April 5, 2018 for most dental, medical, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, pastoral care, physical therapy, public health and social work students, the campus will join together for a daylong interprofessional curriculum. Students, faculty, and staff will cross school boundaries and join together for presentations, experiential learning, workshops, and skill-building seminars that convey the necessity and skills of egalitarian team work. Our curriculum will be fortified with lessons from our community partners in Washington Heights. The biggest challenges to health and the richest opportunities for wellness belong to well-functioning teams. We will take up pressing topics including the opioid epidemic, environmental hazards, issues of diversity, problems of bias, health policy, resource allocation, burnout, disability, food adequacy, dementia care, preventive care, gun violence, veterans’ health, care for marginalized populations, refugee care and more. This is a day of action and commitment so we can all behold and harness our power as health care professionals.
