Mae Ngai on the founding of CSER

I'm very proud of the fact that I've mentored and advised graduate students, students of color, first generation immigrant families. It's not easy for these students to thrive here. They're really smart, but the environment is very strange to them. And so it takes a lot of mentoring and support. But these students have done wonderfully they've got tenure track jobs and they're publishing books and they get awards, so that I'm very proud of. Second is building the center right CSER, where we have a wonderful community of scholars and students who have really built this robust program around the study of ethnicity and race. CSER has embarked on a process to become a full academic unit and we're very excited about about that.
