Columbia University Pathways Programs

Columbia is home to many programs that serve as a bridge to recruit candidates, who have faced barriers in their academic journey, to advance from high school to undergraduate studies, undergraduate to graduate studies, graduate studies to faculty positions, and junior faculty positions to research independence.

As part of the Inclusive Faculty Pathways initiative, the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement has convened an administrative group called Columbia University Pathways Programs (CUPP) that connects the staff and faculty who coordinate these programs and organizes joint summer programming to create a climate of inclusion and belonging for participants. 

The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement is proud to support four such programs:

Brain Seminar for Teens and Opportunities for Research Mentorship (BrainSTORM)

The BrainSTORM Program introduces high school students to the study of the brain through both clinical and research perspectives, including fields such as neurology, neuropsychology, and neuroscience.

Bridge to the Ph.D. Program in STEM

The Bridge to the Ph.D. Program in STEM is designed to increase the participation of individuals who have encountered barriers on their path to a graduate education in Ph.D. programs in STEM disciplines.

Provost Doctoral Fellowship Program

The Provost Doctoral Fellowship Program is designed to support Columbia Ph.D. students, who have faced barriers on their path to graduate school, through a supplementary stipend and professional development programming.

Provost’s Postdoctoral Research Scientist and Scholar Program

This program supports the recruitment of outstanding postdoctoral scholars, who have faced barriers on their path to an academic career, to more closely reflect the composition of the national pool of qualified candidates.
