Faculty Snapshot: Vanessa Burbano
Tell us about your work.
I am a strategy scholar who studies the strategic implications of socially responsible and irresponsible company practices. I examine whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) and communication of social-political claims benefit (or harm) firms through the behavior of a critical stakeholder—the employee. I'm also fascinated by what drives companies to engage in misconduct and socially irresponsible behavior. I teach the core strategy MBA course at CBS.
What have you been listening to lately? Can you recommend a podcast, album, or artist?
I've been listening to my favorite Latin artists a lot recently. Carlos Vives' music always puts me in a good mood. I like Marc Anthony for a throwback to the days when dancing salsa didn't make you a COVID superspreader. J Balvin, Wisin & Yandel, and Daddy Yankee are perfect beats for running and/or strength training!
What are you looking forward to most once we all return to campus?
I look forward to interacting with people again! I miss seeing my students in person, and I miss the conversations and ideas that would come out of casual conversations with my colleagues. After these interactions disappeared due to the pandemic, I realized how much energy I used to get from them. So when we return to campus, come on by—my door is always open!
