Tenure Clock Extension Deadline Extended to September 30, 2026

March 20, 2026

Dear Colleagues,

As we continue to manage the impact of the extraordinary pressures that have been placed on the University—including ongoing uncertainty in federal research funding and potential challenges for research-related international travel—we are fully cognizant of the possible impact these developments will have on our tenure-track faculty. Therefore, I am extending the deadline by six months to apply for a one-year tenure clock extension for those who have not previously submitted a request. The new deadline will be September 30, 2026.

To request a tenure clock extension:

  • The extension requests will be processed on a case-by-case basis. Faculty should submit a request and their current CV to their department and Dean’s office. The Dean’s office will forward approved requests to the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs for final review and approval by the Provost.

  • Tenure candidates should provide a statement describing the impact of recent developments on their research, such as what grants were cancelled or awards delayed (e.g., funded grants, study sections, review panels, etc.), and how immigration status could affect their ability to travel or conduct research. The statement should describe how these circumstances have impeded, or may impede, their work.

  • Those who have already received a one-year extension under this policy (announced initially March 31, 2025) may not submit another request or request a second year on top of the one they have already been granted.

  • Requests may be submitted no later than September 30, 2026.

If you have any questions about this updated policy and its implementation, please reach out to Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Eugenia Lean.

Sincerely,

Angela V. Olinto
