Faculty Fellowship and Exchange Opportunities

I am pleased to invite applications for the following faculty international fellowship and exchange opportunities. Please note that the awards are not all for the same academic year. Some will be awarded for 2018-19, while others will be for 2019-20.
- Sovern/Columbia Affiliated Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome (2018-19 Academic Year): Deadline Wednesday, March 7, 2018
- Tsunoda Senior Fellowship Program at Waseda University in Tokyo (2018-19 Academic Year): Deadline Wednesday, March 7, 2018
- Alliance Visiting Professorships in Paris (2019-2020 Academic Year): Deadline Friday, June 22, 2018

Fellowships and Exchange Opportunities
The American Academy in Rome [www.aarome.org] is a distinguished interdisciplinary center for advanced study that regularly houses about 75 scholars, many of them – like the Sovern Fellows – for periods of one to two months. Each year a full-time Columbia officer is selected as the Sovern/Columbia Affiliated Fellow. The Fellow receives a 4-6 week residency at the Academy which provides housing (single room with private bath); meals six days a week (lunch and dinner); the opportunity to participate in trips and tours organized for and by Academy Fellows; invitations to all Academy concerts, conferences, exhibitions, lectures, readings, and symposia; and access to all Academy scholarly resources, including the Library, Photographic Archive, Antiquities Collection and Archaeology Room. It is a non-stipendiary award, and the Fellow is responsible for all other costs associated with the fellowship, including travel and other living expenses.
The 4-6 week residency must be scheduled between September 10, 2018 and July 29, 2019.
The Sovern Fellow must be employed full-time at Columbia and can be a scholar, artist, curator, librarian or administrator in any of the following fields: Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern, and Modern Italian Studies, and Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Literature, Musical Composition, and Visual Art.
Individuals wishing to be considered for the 2018-19 fellowship should submit:
- a CV
- a proposal of no more than two pages in length that outlines what the applicant proposes to do in Rome and describes how the fellowship and the resources of the Academy will facilitate those endeavors
- three ranked sets of dates of the proposed residency (top choice, 2nd and 3rd)
- a short letter of support from the chair of the applicant’s Columbia department
The deadline for submitting applications for the Sovern Fellowship is Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Applications should be submitted to the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Programs via e-mail at [email protected].
Established in 1882, Waseda University [www.waseda.jp] is one of the leading research-intensive universities in Japan. It offers a broad menu of undergraduate, graduate and graduate professional programs and has established the Tsunoda Fellowship to promote academic exchanges between the faculties of Columbia and Waseda. Fellows receive access to an apartment which can accommodate up to a family of 3-4 persons, a monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses and one economy class trip for themselves (not family members) to and from Japan for purposes of the fellowship program. It is a non-stipendiary award, and Fellows are responsible for all other costs associated with the fellowship.
Fellowships may be awarded for any duration between one month and twelve months. Faculty must be able to begin their fellowship during the academic year of the award, which runs from September 1 to August 31 of the following year. Fellows must be in residence during the period in which they hold the fellowship.
During the period of the residency, Fellows are not asked to offer formal instruction in the University, but they may be asked to give a lecture on a subject of their academic interests and will be expected at least once during the period of the fellowship to present the results of their current research. They may also be asked to hold informal talks or seminars with faculty and advanced graduate students who share their academic field or scholarly interests.
Full-time faculty wishing to be considered for the fellowship should submit:
- a copy of their CV
- a brief description of no more than two pages in length that includes the faculty’s field of specialization and research proposal title, and outlines the research they propose to do while in Tokyo
- the name or names of Waseda colleagues with whom they intend to work/interact with while there
- three ranked sets of dates of the proposed residency (top choice, 2nd and 3rd)
- a short letter of support from the chair of the applicant’s Columbia department
Priority is given to scholars whose fields of study correspond broadly with those of Waseda faculty and whose research can be advanced by a physical presence in Japan and use of Japan’s archival, scholarly, and/or scientific resources. Fluency in the Japanese language is useful but not required.
The deadline for submitting applications for the 2018-19 Tsunoda Fellowship is Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Applications should be submitted to the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Programs via e-mail at [email protected].
As part of their long-term academic collaboration, Columbia University, the École Polytechnique, Sciences Po, and Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne offer a semester-long program of faculty exchange. The faculty exchange is intended to foster transatlantic linkages among faculty and to increase the range of educational experiences available to students at the participating institutions. Three Alliance Visiting Professorships will be offered to full-time Columbia faculty members in 2019-20.
- École Polytechnique: One full-time officer of instruction of professorial rank will be selected to spend one semester as a visiting professor at École Polytechnique.
- Sciences Po: One full-time officer of instruction of professorial rank will be selected to spend one semester as a visiting professor at Sciences Po.
- Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne: One full-time officer of instruction of professorial rank will be selected to spend one semester as a visiting professor at the Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne.
All Alliance visiting professors are required to teach one full course (14 x 2-hour sessions in one semester) in English at the host university. They are also expected to give two academic lectures or seminar presentations, and to attend two dinners or public events hosted by the Alliance Program.
Visiting professors receive a salary from the host institution to help cover travel, visa and living expenses incurred while teaching at the host institution.
Full-time faculty members wishing to be considered for a 2019-20 visiting professorship should submit:
- a CV
- a one-page statement outlining how the exchange opportunity would benefit their research and teaching interests, the semester in which they would like to visit (Fall or Spring) and the course(s) that they would propose to teach at the host institution
- a short letter of support from the chair of the applicant’s Columbia department
