Faculty Advancement Network (FAN) Equity-Based Academic Leadership Workshops

The Faculty Advancement Network (FAN) is a consortium of national research universities collaborating to advance diversity and inclusion in the American professoriate. Members are leaders in faculty affairs, advancement, development, diversity, and inclusion across twelve institutions. They work to identify collaborations to reimagine the norms, structures, policies, and programs that shape university cultures.

Equity-Based Academic Leadership Workshops share best practices from FAN sessions for an audience of Columbia faculty. Course materials, including scholarly articles and presentation videos, are available on Courseworks. Faculty are invited to attend for a live discussion of the material presented.

FAN INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP SERIES

The Faculty Advancement Network offers its Inclusive Leadership Series for all members of the consortium. The 2023-24 schedule includes a range of discussions, each hosted by a FAN university and aligned with our shared mission to advance diversity and inclusion in the American professoriate.

Inclusive & Culturally Aware Mentoring

June 2024 | Hosted by Cornell University

In this session, participants are introduced to various mentoring models to support faculty throughout their career stages. The workshop focuses on inclusive and culturally- affirming practices. Participants fill out a presurvey which asks them about their experiences as mentors and mentees and are offered an opportunity to share their views and expectations around faculty mentoring. Participants work through scenarios that provide them with tools to engage in effective mentoring. (More details forthcoming.)

EQUITY-BASED ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS

In Fall of 2023, the Faculty Advancement team launched a series of professional development workshops designed to empower individual faculty to advance equity in their schools and departments. These workshops are informed by the Faculty Advancement Network's Institute on Inquiry, Equity, and Leadership in the Academic Department, a series equity-centered learning modules which tackle discretionary spaces where just one faculty member can make a meaningful impact on equity. Most workshops include a video prologue; workshop resources (including readings); and a prompt for online discussion among faculty participants.

Workshop 1: Faculty Searches and Hiring

November 28, 2023, 12:30pm - 2pm

Our first live session, Faculty Searches and Hiring, featured a panel with Columbia faculty Matthew Hart, Gita Johar, Olatunde Johnson, and Eliza Konofagou. Participants reviewed Profs. Damani White-Lewis and Román Liera's FAN Inclusive Leadership Workshop on actualizing racial equity throughout the faculty hiring process. This program presented research on the role of typical faculty hiring criteria and practices that cement racial and ethnic inequalities in the professoriate.
