The project allowed for the creation of a Columbia Irving Medical Center Diversity-day. This event was an interdisciplinary, and collaborative event held annually within Columbia. It allowed for prospective residency applicants to re-visit during the end of interview season, connect with other URM house-staff and faculty, showcase research, and highlight a keynote speaker that discusses how Columbia, as an institution combats structural racism, racial bias, and highlights diversity, ultimately serving as an open dialogue event. Such recruitment days already exist at other institutions, and allow prospective applicants, exposure to not only the Department of Emergency Medicine, but all departments, including Internal Medicine, Ob-Gyn, Surgery, and surgical subspecialties.
This project was funded through the Addressing Racism: A Call to Action for Higher Education initiative of the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement.
