Provost Diversity Fellows Small Grants Program

The Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement is pleased to issue this call for proposals the small grants program designed specifically for current Provost Diversity Fellows.

This small-grants program is designed to support current Provost Diversity Fellows at Columbia University by providing funding support for new or ongoing research projects.

Requests for proposals occur once a year in the spring semester. The maximum award is $2,000. Proposals must be submitted with the support of the Fellow’s PI or advisor.

Eligibility and Fundable Activities

Support is intended for current Provost Diversity Fellows who have demonstrated potential for an academic career. Budget items may include, but are not limited to:

  • research assistance
  • pilot/seed funding for innovative research projects (new or ongoing research and scholarship)
  • procurement of research materials
  • computational resources
  • equipment
  • supplies
  • travel to conduct research

Applicants must provide a brief statement addressing the program’s expected impact towards the applicant’s goals.

The funds may not be used as salary support for the applicant, support for an unpaid leave of absence, summer salary, or a housing supplement. Office of the Provost funds should not be assessed administrative fees. 

Application Requirements

The application package must include: 

  • Curriculum vitae/resume
  • School/Department contact details (PI/advisor, department administrator)
  • Applicant’s proposal (not to exceed 2 pages), describing: 
    • Planned project and anticipated outcomes 
    • How the project will further the academic/career goals of the applicant 
      • NOTE: The proposal should be written in such a way that it is understandable to an interdisciplinary review panel 
  • Budget and budget narrative 

Reporting Requirements for Awardees Submission Instructions and Deadline

A report must be submitted to the Office of the Provost within 12 months after the award is made. The report should include a summary of accomplishments (activities and outcomes); final budget report summarizing how funds were used; and additional supporting materials (for example, publications, reports or conference presentations). Further details on reporting requirements will be provided at the time awards are made. 

Acceptance of the award indicates a willingness to be listed on our websites and in other Columbia University publications. Departments and Schools are asked to inform the Office of the Provost of newsworthy announcements related to work supported by the Provost Diversity Fellows Small Grants Program.

Submission Instructions and Deadline

The entire application must be submitted via the online submission form and it must be signed by your PI or advisor. To share the application-in-progress with your PI or advisor, please follow these steps:

  1. Open the application
  2. Click “Save” at the bottom of the page
  3. Select “Get shareable link”
  4. Paste and email the link to yourself and your PI/advisor

The submission deadline is Thursday, February 15, 2024. Notifications will be made by mid-March.
