Columbia’s Housing Mobility Program 2023

Dear Colleague:

The Office of the Provost is very pleased to again offer the Housing Mobility Program (HMP), an application-based initiative which offers faculty members financial support for relocating out of Columbia housing or downsizing from a large Columbia apartment into a smaller one. The deadline to apply is Friday, November 17, 2023.

I want to sincerely thank those who participated in earlier rounds. Time and again we have seen the importance of high-quality housing to our current and prospective faculty members and how our ability to offer excellent housing can be the linchpin of a recruitment or retention effort.

Given the New York residential market, even a slight increase in the availability of University apartments enhances our ability to recruit and retain the most outstanding faculty members. This is especially true for those with growing families, so we particularly implore affiliates with large, senior faculty units who may no longer need three or four bedrooms to give this program serious consideration.

The decision to move is complex and highly personal, and we encourage anyone interested in applying to the program to discuss long-term needs and goals with loved ones and financial planning experts. Funding for the program is very limited; the program was not designed to meet all potential demand. The program description, available here, has information about the potential benefits, eligibility requirements, and application materials.

This program is possible only due to the insights and wisdom shared during its development and throughout its implementation by members of the Senate Committee on Housing Policy, the Housing Priorities Committee, the Provost’s Faculty Advisory Council, and the Office of Work/Life. The ongoing feedback of many of these same individuals has also allowed us to make improvements along the way.

If you have questions beyond these materials, including how to apply, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are grateful for your serious consideration.

Best

Carrie Marlin
