Updated 2020-21 Salary Guidelines for Officers of Research

Dear Colleagues,

With the University’s agreement with the Columbia Postdoctoral Workers-UAW (CPW-UAW), the terms that include new salary minimums came into effect on July 1, 2020, and will be applied retroactively to that date.

The new minimum applicable to Associate Research Scientists/Scholars is $66,100. The new minimum applicable to Postdoctoral Research Scientists/Scholars as well as Postdoctoral Research Fellows is $60,000. If any stipends for fellows are below the new minimum, the principal investigators, or their department, school, institute, or center, must supplement the stipend with sufficient salary to bring the total up to the minimum.

The Revised Guidelines reflect the new minimums that should be used retroactive to July 1 to determine the salaries for Associate Research Scientists/Scholars, Postdoctoral Research Scientists/Scholars, and Postdoctoral Research Fellows for the 2020-21 academic year.

I should also like to remind you that a salary freeze has been in place for the current academic year for all appointments and reappointments since July 1, 2020. Thus, there will be no salary increases for any reappointment with an anniversary date between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021. Under the terms of the contract with CPW-UAW, effective July 1, 2021, salary rate increases for Associate Research Scientists/Scholars, Postdoctoral Research Scientists/Scholars, and Postdoctoral Research Fellows will be at least 2.5 percent.

In addition, the contract provides that if a Postdoctoral Research Scientist/Scholar, with the prior approval of their department chair, director, and/or dean, is awarded an extramural grant resulting in a change of appointment to Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the principal investigators, or their department, school, institute, or center, must supplement the fellow’s stipend with sufficient salary to bring the total up to the fellow’s compensation prior to the award.
