Cross-Disciplinary Frontiers Courses at Columbia

The Office of the Provost is accepting proposals for the development of three courses starting in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025.  The course can be either a new course, or an existing course with a significant modification in the syllabus to reflect a broadened cross-disciplinary scope.  The application deadline is March 1, 2024.

Columbia’s excellence spans 17 schools, and some of the most high-impact scholarship emerges when members of different schools and disciplines come together to explore questions and challenges from multiple perspectives.

To encourage cross-pollination in the classroom, the Office of the Provost invites proposals to create Columbia Cross-Disciplinary Frontier Courses, co-taught by faculty at different schools.

This initiative is in its second year, and aims to provide faculty with opportunities to expand the reach of their teaching beyond their own school and department, and to advance the frontiers of Columbia’s educational offerings by supporting the creation of cross-disciplinary courses that count toward the degree programs for students at two different schools. It responds to the interests of students in enriching their knowledge through courses addressing scholarship at the boundaries of distinct fields, and where they can learn alongside students from other disciplines.

Proposals selected for awards will receive up to $75,000 each per year for two years.

The Office of the Provost will select and support the development of up to three courses to start Fall 2024 or Spring 2025. These will include:

  • Graduate-level courses, co-taught by faculty from two different graduate or professional schools.
  • Undergraduate course co-taught by one faculty member from Arts and Sciences and one from Columbia Engineering.

The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2024.

FAQ

Q: Are full-time officers of instruction with fixed-term appointments eligible?

A: Yes, if their current term lasts to the end of the Year 2 pilot period.  We encourage the application to describe the long-term sustainability plan for the flagship course.
