Cross-Disciplinary Frontiers Courses at Columbia

The Office of the Provost is accepting proposals for the development of four interdisciplinary courses starting in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024.  The application deadline is March 1, 2023.

Columbia’s excellence spans 17 schools, and some of the University’s most vital scholarship emerges when members of different schools and disciplines come together to explore questions and challenges from multiple perspectives.

To encourage cross-pollination in the classroom, we invite proposals to create flagship Columbia Cross-Disciplinary Frontier Courses, co-taught by faculty at different schools.

This initiative aims to provide faculty with opportunities to expand the reach of their teaching beyond their own school and department, and advances the frontiers of Columbia’s educational offerings by supporting the creation of cross-disciplinary courses that count toward the degree programs for students at two different schools. It responds to the interests of students in enriching their knowledge through courses addressing scholarship at the boundaries of different fields, and where they can learn alongside students from different disciplines.

Proposals selected for awards will receive up to $75,000 per year for two years.

The Office of the Provost will support the development of four courses starting in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024 in this initial RFP:

  • Three graduate-level courses co-taught by a pair of faculty from different graduate or professional schools
  • One undergraduate course, co-taught by one Arts and Sciences faculty member and one Columbia Engineering faculty member.

The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2023.

Q: Are full-time officers of instruction with fixed-term appointments eligible?

A: Yes, if their current term lasts to the end of the Year 2 pilot period.  We encourage the application to describe the long-term sustainability plan for the flagship course.
