Recruitment of Academic Personnel System (RAPS)

On July 1st, the University will introduce an online recruiting system for academic personnel known as RAPS (Recruitment of Academic Personnel System) for units outside of the Medical Center. The new system will be extended to the Medical Center in the early fall. Suzanne Laizik is the Project Coordinator for RAPS and will be working with units in the implementation of the new system.
RAPS will also permit us to adopt new affirmative action policies and procedures, effective July 1 st, that will greatly simplify the process of seeking clearance and substantially reduce the time needed to obtain permission to make new appointments. As outlined in the new Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Policy and Procedures for the Appointment of Officers of Instruction, Research, and The Libraries Outside of the Medical Center (effective July 1, 2008), most nominees chosen through a standard search will be cleared by RAPS within twenty-four hours. Waivers also will be handled through RAPS, although they will continue to require clearance by the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action.
To use RAPS, units must submit a new description of their Standard Search and Evaluation Procedures (SSEP). These are the procedures units normally follow in recruiting new academic officers. Beginning July 1st, units may not start a new search unless their SSEP have been approved by the appropriate vice president, dean, or director and the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action.
We have created a user-friendly data-entry form in Microsoft Word for units to use in preparing their new SSEP. Units should follow the instructions for completion of the SSEP form and submit the completed SSEP forms along with the SSEP cover page electronically no later than June 1 st to their vice president, dean, or director who will sign off on them and forward them to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action for final review. Once a unit’s SSEP has been approved, Suzanne will be in touch to arrange for RAPS training.
