Columbia Global Scholars Program Request for Proposals

March 26, 2018

Dear fellow members of the Columbia Community,

We write today to announce the Request for Proposals for the Columbia Global Scholars Program. Columbia is committed to educating and empowering students to be active and informed citizens of our global community, cultivating new knowledge and gaining critical skills throughout their time here. Central to this commitment are curricular innovations that provide students with intellectual rigor, cultural immersion, and opportunities for personal, academic, and professional growth.

The Global Scholars Program (GSP) is a model for such curricular development, offering undergraduates a unique hands-on international research experience in topics of transnational importance, using social science, humanities, and scientific frameworks. Global topics are explored in more than one location, giving students first-hand opportunities to understand and compare how local communities approach these issues.

Faculty are invited to present proposals for awards in support of the GSP, which is comprised of a two-part curriculum: first, an on-campus three-point course held in the spring that introduces students to the course themes, followed by a five-point summer course taught overseas. Set in specific locations abroad, the summer course allows faculty and students to continue the study of the course themes while leveraging the expertise, resources, and cross-regional networks of Columbia’s Global Centers.

The Global Scholars Program was established in 2012 as a joint initiative of the Office of Global Programs and the Columbia Global Centers, in partnership with Columbia’s regional institutes and interdisciplinary centers. Led by faculty members with regional and disciplinary expertise, previously funded programs have studied the following: Environment and Urbanization, Pathways to Development, Contemporary Cities of Eurasia,Media Practices in India and China, and Latin American Cities.

The deadline for application submission is Monday, April 9, 2018. Download the Request for Proposals.

Please email the Office of Global Programs & Fellowships with any questions about the RFP.

Sincerely,
