Call for Proposals for Cross-Disciplinary Frontiers Courses

Faculty are invited to submit proposals to create courses that bring students from different schools together to explore a topic at the intersection between fields.

December 08, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

Columbia’s excellence spans 17 schools, and some of the University’s most vital and innovative scholarship emerges when faculty from different schools come together to explore challenges from multiple disciplinary perspectives.

To encourage cross-pollination in the classroom and advance new interdisciplinary frontiers of knowledge, I invite faculty to submit proposals to create Cross-Disciplinary Frontiers Courses that bring students from different schools together to explore a topic at the intersection between fields.

The Office of the Provost will fund courses that are co-taught by faculty at different schools. Proposals selected for awards will receive up to $75,000 per year for two years.

Proposals will be accepted until March 1, 2024.

Eligible courses include graduate-level courses co-taught by faculty from two different graduate or professional schools, or undergraduate courses co-taught by one faculty member from Arts and Sciences and one from Columbia Engineering. More details and the RFP are available online.

The first Cross-Disciplinary Frontiers Course launched this fall with two more starting in the spring, and we welcome proposals for the current RFP cycle that will build on their success.

The excellence of Columbia’s faculty is its greatest source of strength, and we look forward to continuing this opportunity to further creativity and collaboration across the University’s schools.

Warmly,
Dennis
